The Waves,
South Siberut & Nyang Nyang Island
 
Beng Beng

Distance from the camp: 5 minutes by boat
Description: Perhaps not the crown jewel of
the Mentawais this punchy left hander offers
an abundance of fun for all surfers. Breaking
on all tides, but better on a lower tide, the
wave is ideal around head high or slightly bigger. Although it’s not famed for its barrels,
its long wall offers a 100 yards or so of
perfectly formed walls to practice your turns
on.
Quality: 7.5/10
Suitability: Intermediate
Crowd: Not bad
Swell Direction: Best with some west.
Winds: Offshore on a South East
Tides: Works on all tides
Reef: Shallow-ish take off and inside section,
but generally avoidable and safe as houses.
Hazards: None.
Location: Nyang Nyang Island
Consistency: 7.5/10      



Ebay

Distance from the camp: 10 minutes by boat
Description: One of the areas best quality waves, this fast left hander can offer a 200 yard long perfect barrel. Breaking on all tides, but hollower on a lower tide, the wave starts breaking properly around head high but is
ideal around 4-6’. Not for the faint hearted. Those willing to tackel this fickle beast will reap the rewards.
Quality: 9/10
Suitability: Advanced only.
Crowd: Generally busy when it’s bigger.
Swell Direction: Best with some west in the swell.
Winds: Offshore on a South East
Tides: Best mid to high.
Reef: Watch out for the inside section as it
can get nasty, especially at low tide.
Hazards: two rocks are very apparent in the line-up on smaller swells and also watch out
for the end section.
Location: Nyang Nyang Island
Consistency: 4/10



Pit Stop

Distance from the camp: 12 minutes by boat
Description: This super fun short right hander can offer 2 good barrel sections. Breaking on
all tides, but hollower on a lower tide, the
wave starts breaking around chest high but
can handle up to around 6’.  It's situated on
the other end of the reef from Ebay and breaks extremely close to the shore, ending on the white sand beach. Pits stops is a great little wave but offers only a small take off zone so
it's not ideal with much more than half a
dozen guys out.
Quality: 7.5/10
Suitability: Intermediates.
Crowd: Average.
Swell Direction: Best with some west in the swell.
Winds: Offshore on a South East
Tides: Best mid to high tide
Reef: Sharp but avoidable on a higher tide.
Hazards: None.
Location: Nyang Nyang Island
Consistency: 7/10




Bank Vaults

Distance from the camp: 20 minutes by boat
Description: Heavy, fast and barrelling, this mechanical right offers numerous barrel
sections for any willing surfer. Breaking for up
to 300 yards, the wave breaks on all tides. Very shallow on a lower tide, the wave starts breaking around chest high but can still be perfect up to around 8’-10’.  It's one of the
most consistent waves in the area and can handle a crowd due to it's double peak.
Quality: 8/10
Suitability: Advanced.
Crowd: Not Bad.
Swell Direction: Best South, South West.
Winds: Offshore on a North East
Tides: Best mid to high tide
Reef: Nasty inside section.
Hazards: Shifty take off zone, sometimes 100 yards variation.
Location: Nyang Nyang Island
Consistency: 8/10


Nipussy

Distance from the camp: 20 minutes by boat
Description: 150-yard right that offers a steep take-off with a super fun workable wall. Best around head high to double over head. Nipussy is a wave magnet and is rarely flat.
Quality: 7.5/10
Suitability: Intermediate.
Crowd: Average.
Swell Direction: Best South, South West.
Winds: Offshore on a North East
Tides: Best mid to high tide
Reef: Nasty inside section.
Hazards: Wide sets break on larger swells.
Location: Nyang Nyang Island
Consistency: 8.5/10

Hideaways

Distance from the camp: 20 minutes by boat
Description: One of the areas best waves on
its day. This 100-yard left needs a decent
swell to break but offers perfect tubes when it starts working. The wave breaks on all tides
but can be dangerous on a lower tide.
Quality: 9/10
Suitability: Advanced.
Crowd: Average.
Swell Direction: South, best with some west.
Winds: Offshore on a South East
Tides: Best mid to high tide
Reef: Nasty inside section.
Hazards: Fire Coral.
Location: Simaimu Island
Consistency: 7/10


Burger World

Distance from the camp: 30 minutes by boat
Description: Idyllic surf spot when everywhere’s small. This right breaking wave can offer a bit of everything from workable walls to some fun tubes and can peel for 200 yards. It’s a swell magnet for the off season, but sadly cant handle too much swell.
Quality: 7/10
Suitability: Intermediate.
Crowd: Average.
Swell Direction: Best South, South West.
Winds: Offshore on a North East
Tides: All tides.
Reef: Not too bad.
Hazards: Wide sets break on larger swells.
Location: Dodiki Island
Consistency: 7/10
